Here are some tips to stop the anger spiral, and process anger in healthy and productive ways.
Something sets you off, you ruminate about it, and the more you think about the situation the more angry you feel! Here are some of my tips to stop the anger spiral, and process anger in healthy and productive ways
1. Underlying or accompanying anger are other feelings. Can you name them?
They could be feeling hurt, shame, fear, attacked, offended, trapped disrespected, or pressured.
2. Gain self-awareness. Write to understand why you’ve noticed these feelings.
When we put our feelings into language, it helps us distance ourselves from our feelings, and allows us to think more calmly when we feel angry.
3. Express anger in healthy ways
We can express anger in other healthy ways such going for a walk outside to clear the mind, exercising, talking to a supportive person in our life or doing something creative and fun.
4. It's a choice
Sometimes, stopping the anger spiral is a choice. It can be helpful to remind yourself of what you can control and what you can’t.
We can’t control how other people think, or what they say, and do. But we can control our own actions, and how we process big feelings.
Knowing how to regulate overwhelming emotions is important to our mental health.
When we experience big emotions or don’t process them in healthy ways it can affect our mental health, relationships, and other areas of our life - a big for me, is sleep!
